Oscar Pistorius, who was found guilty of culpable homicide in the shooting of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, has been sentenced to five years in jail but could be eligible for a conditional release after 10 months.
On Tuesday, Judge Thokozile Masipa delivered the sentencing at Pretoria’s High Court in South Africa and also sentenced the athlete to an additional three years in prison for the second count of a firearm contravention. She ordered that sentence to be wholly suspended.
Pistorius stood as the judge announced his sentence, and then left the courtroom and walked down a flight of stairs that lead to holding cells. His sentence starts immediately. He is being held in in the holding cells at the North Gauteng High Court and is expected to be transferred to Pretoria Central prison.
The athlete won't appeal, his family confirmed. Reeva's family said the punishment “is the right sentence.”
What do you think of the judge’s sentence?
