Surgeons in Mumbai removed 232 teeth-like growths from the mouth of a teenager named 17-year-old Ashik Gavai after her suffered swelling on the right side of his lower jaw.
The teenager was suffering from a condition known as complex odontomas which are haphazardly arranged tooth-like growths, composed of enamel, dentin (the yellowish tissue that makes up the bulk of all teeth) and pulp tissue (part in the center of a tooth made up of living connective tissue).
The surgery was done earlier this week and surgeons believe it may be a world-record operation as a maximum of 37 teeth has ever been removed in such a procedure.
"We operated on Monday and it took us almost seven hours,' head of dentistry Sunanda Dhivare-Palwankar, told AFP. We thought it [would] be simple surgery but once we opened [him up] there were multiple pearl-like teeth inside the jaw bone.”
Fortunately, the surgeons were able to maintain Gavai's jawbone structure which means it should heal without any deformities. Once removed, odontomas do not recur.
