#ShrienDewani "Fit To Stand Trial" For The Murder Of His Wife In South Africa

On August 15, the South African Press Association reported that Shrien Dewani's lawyer, Francois van Zyl, confirmed that the mental health panel appointed by the court, made a unanimous decision that businessman, Dewani, 31, is not mentally ill and is fit to stand trial in October for the murder of his wife, Anni Dewani in Cape Town

Dewani, from Bristol, UK, is accused of ordering Anni's murder during their honeymoon in November 2010. She was shot in the neck as the couple travelled in a taxi on the outskirts of Cape Town. He faces charges of conspiracy to commit kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder, kidnapping, and perverting the course of justice.

Dewani previously claimed that they were kidnapped at gunpoint as they drove through Gugulethu township and that he was released unharmed but his wife's body was found in the abandoned car the next day.

Following a long legal battle over the seriousness of his mental health problems, Dewani, who was detained in a hospital in Britain for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, was extradited from the UK in April to face trial.

A pre-trial hearing will take place on September 9 before his trial starts on October 6 in South Africa.
