Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland, has been granted a temporary restraining order against ex-boyfriend Matt Prokop after he verbally and physically abused her during the last 4 years of their relationship.
The couple broke up in August after dating for five years and in the new court docs obtained by TMZ, Hyland claims she was choked, pushed, and threatened by Prokop. She claims her Modern Family co-star Julie Bowen, who plays her mom, witnessed some of the abuse and stepped in to help her,
Hyland cites one incident in May, in which Prokop allegedly choked her because he didn't like her outfit. He pinned her against a car by her throat and called her a “c*nt.”
“His grip was so tight that I could not breathe or speak. I was scared and in fear for my life,” she wrote in the docs, and says she suffered injuries to her voice and had a "very sore throat following this event."
Hyland says she knew she was in an abusive relationship and asked Bowen to come to her house to help "peacefully end the relationship" and even bought a plane ticket for Prokop, who lived with her, to return to his native Texas but when Prokop saw the intervention, he freaked out and “ran outside to the backyard and began screaming.”
Hyland says Prokop then threw a lighter at her, and Bowen stepped in and told her to leave the house because she wasn't safe around him. Hyland further claims that Prokop threatened to burn down her home and threatened that she would never see her dog again.
After Hyland broke up with Prokop, she claims he "relentlessly bombarded me with vile, threatening and emotionally disturbing texts and voice mails including his own suicide threats."
Prokop entered a rehab center in August, but he got out on September 21. The director of the facility then contacted her and told her it would be in her best interest to get a restraining order against him due to his mental state and attitude against her.
Hyland took his advice and got the temperate restraining order which requires Prokop stay 100 yards away from her and her dog. Her lawyer said in a statement:
“On September 19, 2014, Ms. Hyland obtained a Domestic Violence Temporary Restraining Order against Matthew Prokop. The documents filed speak for themselves. Out of respect for the court, the process and all parties, I have advised Ms. Hyland not to comment on the matter. We request that you respect the parties’ privacy during this time.”
