Sofia Vergara adorns the cover of Shape’s November issues, in which she dished on how she keeps her enviable body fit and healthy.
“I've never been into working out. I was always very happy with what I have,” the actress said. “I mean, like any woman I'd complain that my thighs were too big or whatever, but I felt comfortable with my curves - people expected me to have them. I hit 40 and I started seeing a softness everywhere on my body. I read a lot about how your metabolism drops when you age. I knew it was time to do something, so I did."
The Modern Family star said she's inspired by co-star #JulieBowen's diligence when it comes to her exercise routine, the mom-of-three waking up early every day to go for a run before work.
“Me? I'll find any excuse to skip exercise,” Sofia laughs. “I'll say, ‘Sunday? No, it's the Lord's day; I can't work out.’”
On her exercise method of choice, she said:
“I use the Megaformer. They call the classes Strengthen, Lengthen, Tone [SLT] in New York. It's based on Pilates but is much more advanced. I got into it because I have bad knees. Ever since I was young, I haven't been able to work out like everyone else - I couldn't run or do normal squats or anything that puts too much pressure on my knees. But with this machine, I was able to figure out what worked for me. I don't love it at all, but I love how my body's changing.”
“I also lifts free weights. I started at only 2lbs and now I'm up to 8 and 10lb weights, which is a lot for me. I wish I had worked out more when I was younger and taken it as seriously as I do now.”
Sofia said she adopted a healthy approach to food when she moved to Los Angeles in 2005.
“You can't always order the high-fat dishes like pasta with truffles. You have a little sushi, and when you're out with your girlfriends you order a nice salad. Recently I started drinking vegetable juices that I copied from Dr Oz. A healthy diet isn't a mystery. Eat your vegetables and stay away from processed foods. When I do indulge, I exercise a bit harder the next day. My workout motto is really simple: No pain, no cake!”
She explains: “I really need to have sweets. So I try to have them in moderation. It's so painful! I heard about someone in LA who got hypnotized so they wouldn't eat candy, I'm seriously looking into that because I'm obsessed.”
On her co-star #SarahHyland saying she has “the best boobs in the world,” Sofia said:
“It's hard to dress huge boobs without looking cheap or vulgar!. I'm 42 years old, I had a kid - they're not as perfect as when I was in my 20s. It takes a good bra to put them where they're supposed to be.”
On dating one of Hollywood’s hottest actors, #JoeManganiello, Sofia said:
“It’s all about having a good time. It's been a lot of fun. I want somebody who is kind and makes me laugh, and all those things a woman needs: a person who has drive and is successful in life; someone who takes care of you, makes you feel protected and desired. We all want that, don't we?”
The November issue of Shape magazine hits newsstands on October 9.
