Bill Cosby refused to discuss the rape allegations against him that resurfaced after his internet #CosbyMeme backfired.
The 77-year-old comedian and his wife Camille had an interview with National Public Radio, which aired on Saturday, and Scott Simon brought up the subject when they were talking about the couple's loan to the Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art.
"This question gives me no pleasure, Mr. Cosby, but there have been serious allegations raised about you in recent days," Scott said.
When Bill didn't say a word, Scott said:
"You're shaking your head no. I'm in the news business, I have to ask the question. Do you have any response to those charges?"
Bill remained silent, and Scott added:
"[You're] shaking your head no. There are people who love you who may want to hear from you about this. I want to give you the chance."
Bill didn’t respond. Later same day, Scott tweeted about the interview, writing:
"I said 'It gives me no pleasure, but I have to ask' because Mrs. Cosby there & because Bill is so beloved. But I still asked. He began to shake his head as soon as I began the sentence. We both--we all--knew what I was talking about. Perhaps they thought No Comment would sound worse than silence. It doesn't. I think anyone, Mr. Cosby & PR team included, would know the question was likely to be asked. I assume his response was planned."
Allegations of rape have trailed Bill for years. He settled one case out of court back in 2006, but the claims by multiple women against the comedian returned to the news this week after a victim named Barbara Bowman published a Washington Post article entitled, “Bill Cosby Raped Me. Why Did It Take 30 Years For People To Believe My Story?”
On Friday, Bill’s upcoming appearance on “The Late Show with David Letterman” was canceled amid the scandal.
