A53

Longtime ESPN anchor Stuart Scott passed away on Sunday morning (Jan. 4) at the age of 49 after a long battle with cancer. The “SportsCenter” announced the new via Twitter, saying:

“We are heartbroken to report that Stuart Scott has died after a long fight with cancer.”

Scott joined “SportsCenter” in 1993 and he was known for his hilarious catchphrases including “As cool as the other side of the pillow,” “It must be jelly because jam don’t shake like that,” and “Boo-yah!”

He first fell ill in 2007 after an appendectomy revealed a malignancy that led him to undergo preventative chemotherapy. He was diagnosed with full-blown cancer in 2011, and went into remission the following year. However, the disease returned in 2013.

In July, Stuart received the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance at the ESPYs and during his acceptance speech, he talked about his battle with cancer.

Scott is survived by his parents, O. Ray and Jacqueline Scott; siblings Stephen Scott, Synthia Kearney and Susan Scott; his daughters Taelor, 19, and Sydni, 15; and girlfriend Kristin Spodobalski.
