Lupita Nyong’o looks gorgeous on the cover of Lucky magazine’s March issue, in which she talked about acting, fame and how she was banned from wearing makeup as a teen.
On pursuing acting, she said:
“I didn’t feel like I had a full grasp of my instrument [before applying to the Yale School of Drama]. I needed to know more. Pursuing acting in that way made me feel equipped and helped me manage my inner critic, which is something I thought I really needed-the ability to quiet that voice that says ‘You can’t do this.’”
She also talked about the pitfalls of fame saying:
“The not-so-fun part of all this is that when I don’t feel like being famous, I still am. When you’re in the middle of Manhattan and you have to pop into Starbucks to use the restroom and everyone recognizes you when you’re waiting in line, its awkward.”
On wearing makeup, the actress said:
“My mother has never ever worn a drop of makeup in her life — not even at her wedding. Honestly, my mother’s outlook was hard for me to take when I was a teenager and wanted to experiment. But in the end I appreciated it, because today I can look in a mirror with no makeup on and love myself. My mother didn’t think makeup was necessary, and I don’t think it's necessary. It’s an accessory. It’s as necessary as a pair of earrings, if you know what I mean. It’s something I do to adorn myself. I don’t do it to hide myself.”
As proof, Lupita shared a split image of her bare-faced mom in 1983, and herself in 2015 without makeup via Instagram on Monday, which she captioned:
"Like mother (1983), like daughter (2015). #behindthescenes @luckymagazine @lancomeusa #OhToBeHalfTheWomanMyMumIs #bts."
