She's long been known as a diva. And on Tuesday night, Mariah Carey lived up to that reputation, through no fault of her own, as she opened the 2014 World Music Awards, held at Monte Carlo's Le Sporting Club in Monaco four hours behind schedule. The 44-year-old was all set to launch her new album, Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse, which is currently No.1 on the iTunes charts in 20 countries, prior to the awards show, but when it was pushed back by several hours due to changing of presenters last minutes, the proceedings were thrown into chaos.
'Mariah was meant to be at the Sporting Club at 5.30pm but her album launch was put back to 9.30pm,' The Mirror reports a senior producer as explaining. 'The whole event has been delayed. It's not great.' However, it seems not everyone was aware of the cause of the delay, with a World Music Awards spokesman not mincing words as he said rather harshly: 'We don't know why Mariah is late, she's just being Mariah.'
When she did finally arrive, the 44-year-old was in fine form as she took to the stage to belt out a tune. The star looked sensational in a long-sleeved floor-length sparkly black gown that featured sexy sheer panels all over - her modesty only protected by skimpy black underwear - and a plunging neckline that exposed plenty of cleavage.
As well as performing during the star-studded ceremony which also saw the likes of Miley Cyrus, Leona Lewis, Ricky Martin and Jason Derulo in attendance - the original diva was also the lucky recipient of two awards. She was awarded the Pop Icon and Best-Selling Solo Artist Of All-Time gongs and took to the podium to make a gushing speech dressed in her second outfit of the evening.
Posting several photos with her awards backstage in her dressing room as she was joined by her three-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe, the proud mom gushed that no award could measure up to her precious babies. 'The best awards I've ever received: Roc & Roe!! Thank you Melissa & all at the World Music Awards in Monte Carlo #L4L,' she wrote to accompany the sweet black and white shot of her kids playing with the shiny statuettes.
In another show of her divaliciousness, Mariah even arrived with her own lighting guy to ensure she looked her absolute best at all times. 'She likes to have her lighting man wherever she goes to make sure the lighting is right. That's really important to her,' a source tells The Mirror.
While Mariah's late arrival may have thrown a spanner in the works for organisers and fellow performers, she wasn't the only one causing chaos on the night. Presenter Sharon Stone failed to show up entirely, leading Pamela Anderson to be called in at the last minute to step in for her.
