The woman who accused #BrightEyes front man Conor Oberst of rape has confessed she made it up! On 14 July, Joanie Faircloth, reportedly signed a legal affidavit stating:

"I publicly retract my statements about Conor Oberst, and sincerely apologize to him, his family, and his fans for writing such awful things about him. I realize that my actions were wrong and could undermine the claims of actual sexual assault victims and for that I also apologize."

Faircloth claimed she was a virgin when Conor came onto her backstage after a 2003 concert in Durham, North Carolina and raped her.  The fabricated claims first began to circulate in late 2013, after Faircloth made the allegations in the comments section of the website xojane.com

According to Conor's rep, Faircloth ignored seven months of attempted legal contact before submitting her notarized statement this week. That delay came at a cost. Conor lost a $200,000 publishing contract due to his ongoing legal issues and is now suing Faircloth for $1.2 million.
